Deborah Baird | Casting the Nets on the Lady Jane

Lady Jane is a retired steel shrimping vessel refurbished for "working" pleasure cruises in the protected waters of the St. Simons estuary system of the Marshes of Glynn and its tributaries in Georgia. When the nets come up you may find bonehead, blacktip and sand sharks, horseshoe crab, puffer fish, amberjack, croaker, spot, whiting, blue crab and skate as well as shrimp. The crew sorts the catch and identifies it while passengers feast on the freshly caught and boiled crustaceans. These images, made on two separate trips, chronicle the marshes, the oyster beds, the catch, the nets and the birds that follow them, and the incredible scenery in the waters around the Sidney Lanier bridge.
